Classical Hatha Yoga

Hatha Yoga is a very broad-based practice, covering asana , pranayama ,meditation, mudra, philosophy. Whereas Ashtanga Yoga is generally prescribed sequence of asana-s and pranayama techniques and a direct lineage from Patanjali, Hatha yoga embraces many sources such as Svatmarama, Rishi Gheranda, Northern and Southern traditions also. Some of the main schools/traditions of prominence are : Sivanada, Bihar School, Kriya, Himalayan, Kaivalyadhama

My first Hatha Yoga teacher was Sri Selvarajan Yesudian, through the medium of his very fine book Yoga and Health which I acquired in the 1970s and still have it today (though all its pages are loose and the cover is very worn). This book was my guide for a number of years. Practising regularly from it and exploring the asana and pranayama practices until I was able to master everything there. Next followed classes in Iyengar Yoga and Buddhist studies from the Theravada and Mahayana schools. Tibetan Yoga was also of great interest to me, a tradition which I have explored in some detail and continue to do so.

Because the tradition is so vast I have managed to teach a different class week by week for over 20 years without repeating the same classes twice. Some key practices will be shown every so often but generally there will be something 'new' for the student to experience each time.
